India – A Superpower?

India’s Superpower checklist: nuclear weapons, a billion plus people, 55 billionaires and an extremely educated population. With all this you wonder why they cant put together a decent Olympic team. On a serious note, India has one of the largest markets in the world, everyone wants to sell to them and everyone who does is successful beyond imagination. India is demanding more respect and a louder voice in foreign affairs and is willing to put their money out there to have more say in major brands, institutions and companies outside of India.

India’s political and business elites have long harbored a desire for their country to become a great power. They cheered when Prime Minister Manmohan Singh finalized a nuclear deal with the United States in 2008. Indian elites saw the deal, which gave India access to nuclear technology despite its refusal to give up its nuclear weapons or sign the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, as a recognition of its growing influence and power….
