For many of us, decorating the Christmas tree is a task we’re more than happy to avoid. But instead of being a Grinch this festive period, why not show your partner you care and help out with the home décor? Here are five tips on creating a unique and stand-out Christmas tree that is sure to impress all your guests.

Red, white and blue

Create a tree to be proud of with a patriotic inspired design. Switch out the traditional colors of green and red in favor of red, white and blue. Finish the look with American ornaments including small flags and themed baubles. The color scheme can be adapted for those families of other nationalities. It’s a great way to show off your national pride and bring some of your country’s rich culture into the living room.

Build your own

As a master of DIY tasks around the home, it’s now time to use your expertise to create a homemade tree. Aside from saving money on the traditional alternative, the family will also admire your ingenuity. There are plenty of ways to create your own, but a 2D wall mural is one of the easiest. Start with a piece of plywood large enough to showcase your creation. With tape, mark out a 3 by 5 foot isosceles triangle. Next, you’ll need to dig out your saw and cut PVC pipes to varying lengths of 2 to 3.5 inches. These pieces can now be arranged within the tape and glued with epoxy into place. Lean the board against the wall, add colorful decorations to the inside of the pipes and voilà…you’ve created a masterpiece.

The natural look

Bring nature into your home with a woodland designed tree. Avoid artificial trees and opt for a real evergreen to provide that rustic look. Only include decorations which would be found in the forest. Pines cones, berries, nuts and dry grass all work well. These can be spray painted in silver, white or gold to add some much needed color. Miniature stuffed animals or plastic figurines add to the rural theme.

Celebrate the family

Transform your tree into a collection of cherished memories with the use of miniature nickel photo frames. These can be bought cheap in various shapes and sizes. Add old pictures of ancestors, lost relatives and more recent family photos. It’s a unique way to show respect to past generations and you’ll show your family a softer side.

Reminisce on childhood memories with a tree dedicated to the toys of your past. Search though the attic for those classic toys which provided hours of entertainment. Alternatively, get the whole family involved and search thrift stores for vintage pieces. From trains to small teddy bears and plastic figurines, these add some retro charm to your home décor. Attach to the tree using ribbons or floral wire and finish with colored lights.
